Galactic Cannibal is a new pop punk group started last July by Nick Woods of Direct Hit!, along with his brother - noise and experimental artist Peter J Woods - and friends Andy Slania, Ryan Bollis, and Steve Maury. Beginning on a whim, with the goal of creating a new, minimalistic hybrid of pop punk and hardcore (“without the breakdowns or gym shorts” as Woods says), the band offer the catchy, 2-minute, 4-chord sound championed by groups like the Ramones and Misfits, with an attitude copped from powerviolence founders Man Is The Bastard. “It’s the typical story of ‘poppy band with depressing lyrics,’” Woods says, “except we’re a lot poppier, and a lot more depressing. It’s pretty intense band, I think. Even with that concept in mind when we started, Peter took it to a new level with the lyrical content, at least when it comes to this kind of sound. I’m used to writing songs with a redemptive element - There’s none of that here.” The result is music that’s as catchy as it is brutal, with an initial release by Chicago label Hewhocorrupts Inc.”
